<p>DIED. JAMES LEO HERLIHY, 66, playwright, actor and author of
the novels Midnight Cowboy and All Fall Down; reportedly from
an overdose of sleeping pills; in Los Angeles. Writing with
hard-edged realism, the Detroit native portrayed troubled adolescents
and those on society's periphery. All Fall Down, published in
1960, was later made into a film starring Warren Beatty and
Eva Marie Saint. In 1965 Herlihy wrote Midnight Cowboy, which
was the basis for the classic film starring Dustin Hoffman and
Jon Voight. Herlihy's play Blue Denim, also made into a movie,
enjoyed a successful Broadway run in 1958.
